Lufthansa Group has acquired a 90% stake in Italy’s ITA Airways, the national airline of Italy (formerly Alitalia), marking a pivotal move that aligns the German carrier with its global network. This acquisition comes after Lufthansa expanded its ownership from 41% to 90%, a decision expected to finalize in early 2027. The deal, subject to EU and US regulatory approvals, will integrate ITA Airways fully into Lufthansa’s operations, including its Star Alliance, Miles & More, and premium lounge networks. CEO Carsten Spohr emphasized the company’s commitment to integrating customer-facing systems and cargo capacity, but noted that the transatlantic joint venture involving United and Air Canada remains pending approval. While the transaction appears limited in scope, it signals a shift toward a more integrated European air travel ecosystem. Lufthansa aims to leverage its global presence while addressing concerns about trade dynamics with foreign carriers.
